Live now

happy

each moment

Today is taking place right now, in this very hour, minuet, second, and as the hand on the clock moves forward it will never happen again. Live for now, not what has been and not what could be.

Live in the moment

The stressors of our lives very rarely last for long periods of time, it is a fleeting thought, conversation or event that can uproot our daily routine and send us into a state of anxiety, stress, shock and disarray. They of course can have a lingering after effect on our daily lives and the way in which must adapt and move about in them. Yet the event has been and gone and now we are left with that needs to be done to move forward.

So should we just choose to let go and never look back, I don’t believe so. I think that for most of us to ask this of us would only induce more stress. However with time the magnitude of some events can diminish and we can indeed move forward freely without their impact. What about the fleeting thought, that is something that we have capacity to change in that very moment. We have the power to stop mid thought and change the direction of it, yet do we? Again for the most of us no we do not and we allow it to set off a chain reaction of other thoughts that can impinge on our perception of life and what it is and how it could be. A conversation can never be had again so it choose words wisely before you speak with a forked-tongue. I know when I feel angry upset or hurt I have adopted the mindset of ‘are my words truthful are the productive or am I lashing out as I feel out of control’ if I answer yes to the last part then my words stay put and are not spoken.

What about those of us who stressors are in the future of what could be? Well it may never be. The future is always that the future. Smart planning in our lives can certainly help reduce the stress of the unknown. Obviously the choice you make today can affect some parts of your future. Never saving can affect your ability to fee financial secure. Not have goals or aspirations can leave you feeling like you are floundering. (Though some people are happy to wander and discover all they need as they do). One thing however to be taken into account is that nobody is guaranteed their future, it is a gift. Right now you are all guaranteed to simply have now this moment.

Few can claim to live a totally stress free life, yet many more can reduce the stress in their life if they chose to live for now. A shift in focus to the now can bring about new clear thoughts. We can allow ourselves to enjoy the moment rather than allow hurt from the past or fear of the future to rob us of this time. Regret comes from not living life.Everyone will die yet not everyone lives.

Right now in this moment chose to live. Choose to not allow the past or future to rob you of the present.

all things change

change is beauty

change is beauty

The equinox is here again and as the wheel turns all things change. Be it spring for those in the north or autumn for those in the south one this is for sure, the days are now changing. Its time to embrace the cycles of life as the year moves forward.

For me personal I love the change in seasons, I love the nights becoming cooler and the days becoming short, of course I love the flip side of it as well when come background to warmth and long nights. Yet as I bid goodbye to summers warm kiss this year I find myself falling in love even more with the beauty of longer nights. Not because I feel I can sleep more in fact quiet the opposite. I feel have more time for me. Now as the sun takes longer to break the night sky I find myself rising earlier so I can embrace the beauty before dawn. It inspires me, it nourishes me and I find that the words I write in my conversation hour flow at a quicker pace, freely and effortlessly.  This time of year is seeing me fall in love with the words on the page, not just what I have written but of those that have been written by others I am inspired by the journey they have taken and the change they have allowed to flow in their lives in when they have wanted for life to stop and they let them off the crazy ride.

Tha autumn equinox like that of the spring brings a day of balance where day and night reside equally. For both its a time of being thankful and being balanced. If you are in the north you are about to welcome more daylight and this brings about it fun and play, times of new growth is there not only in your gardens but in your life. It’s a time for fertility of ideas and creativity. Now is the time for positive change. Go with it allow the energy to flow and bring abundance your way. For those of us in the south right now look at all you have been able to achieve of the warmer months, look at how your life has grown and taken leaps forward. Allow yourself to acknowledge everything you have completed. Be thankful for what you have achieved, as the nights begin to take hold you will be able to sit back and enjoy your bounty. Its a time to sit for moment and reflect ensuring that you bring your body into balance. When you align with the change in season and the balance of light and dark you allow for new opportunities to be revealed both for those in the north and southern hemisphere.

Each new season brings about subtle adjustments to the way we live even down to the food we eat. For me I am bidding farewell for now to lush summer fruits, mangoes, peaches and nectarines and welcoming hearty pears and apples. My evening meal is warmer, my children love to eat soup with thick crusty bread. Roast dinners with root vegetables will start to make their way onto our plates. My children are asking for a jumper as they greet the crisp morning air. Today as we step outside just before the sun was up we watch the beauty of a hot-air balloon take in the glory of the waking day. Oh how I love the changes all around right now.

What ever season you are heading into what ever change is embracing your life right now, know that it’s all apart of the where you are meant to be. Live now in the present moment rather than wishing for a different time. Allow the natural cycles of life to envelope you and take you where you need to go, don’t fight against change its going to happen allow it to. As the year moves on so do we, how hard this change becomes is down to how much we are prepared to let go, embrace, and accept that all things change.

Rolling stones and gathered moss

Standard

What is the saying  A rolling stone gathers no mossmindfull rest

This may be true but let it roll long enough and far enough eventually it hits a place and looses momentum then what. The moss begins to grow, the question is how long that stone stays there covered in moss before an event allows it to gain momentum again. The thunderstorm that brings sweeping rain shifting the stone from its resting place. The wild and wooly winds that bring down a tree branch that swings like a club catapulting the stone back into motion. The  bush walker who ponders and thinks about life while picking up the stone , perhaps to toss it away later on down the track.

And is gathering some moss really all that bad, a time to rest and be covered in lush green warmth, a bit like having a doona day I think!

The mind can be that rolling stone forever in motion never taking the time to stop. As we go through our daily lives we think, analyse, critic, chastise and repeat the mundane over and over again always moving in perpetual motion. Even our dreams have a our mind moving and thinking. And then the speed bump throws a little curve ball that help it come to a rest even if only for a short time. Trouble is some of us are so stuck in the motion of movement and thinking we don’t know how to stop and rest. We miss the sign that tells us to slow down and feel compelled to push through no matter what the cost of our mind, body, soul.

Gathering moss is not a bad thing, and taking time out is not a bad thing. The problem arises when we are the person who wont see the signs, we keep pushing forward. When we dont allow this natually resting state to happen our mind yells ENOUGH and finally stops! Sadly this happens way to often in today’s world. Why? Simply because we don’t allow ourselves to have a break. I have friends who are forced to take vacation time because they accumalted so much of it up at work…. they never stop. I have other friends who do so much for so many that they neglect themselves. Others yet just feel that they can not stop until they reach the end goal to which I ask “is that death? because you aint living right now.”

A friend once worked for a company that allowed 4 doona days a year, and that was on top of the annual sick level entitlement. Yes her job was stressful she dealt with people who could be abrasive; so they company took the step the value the employe and gave them the extra days. Lets face it we all would like a day were we didn’t have  to be a slave to the alarm clock and could just close the world away and lay in bed, or on the lounge and just rest.

So can we actually rest without having to take a whole day, without needing to get to state of forced STOP. rest

Yes we can, we just need to make the time for ourselves. We need to set aside 10 minuets in the day and allow it to be our time, some people now will say I don’t have 10 minutes, yes you do ….. more than likely that 10 minuets is given to some other task right now that does not serve you well. Think about it there is a spare 10 in those 1440 minuets that make up each day.

So what to do during those 10 minuets. REST bring the mind to a place of rest.

Sit in a place that you wont be interrupted. (set a timer if you need to, or pick out soft music that goes for 10 minuets )

Allow you mind to clear of all thoughts, listen to the sound of your breath.

Focus on your breath and then repeat in your mind the words ‘I am’

Dont add anything to these words just the words ‘I am’. As you repeat them over an over you allow the mind to become still.

Once your ten minuets is up allow yourself to be fully awake and in the present moment. Drink some water and get moving again. Your mind is ready for you to keep going forward, its ready for motion once again.

That small 10 minuets each day will allow your mind to become more resilient and resourceful when you need it most. Instead of coming to breaking point your mind will have tools it can now use to help in situation that arise. While a doona day every now and then may still be on the cards, these will days where you enjoy the comfort of your bed and not be retreating to it to hide from the world.

Life is for living and sometime living, means standing still and gathering moss. The moss is the rest and clarity we need to move forward, it’s just we miss the rest stop most of the time and push through.live life

Conversation Hour

Standard

Seems that the world is only ever going to allow me 24 hours in the day when I feel like I need 48 or even 72 hours to get all I want done. Why is that there never seems conversationsto be enough time?

Well for me it because I can be a great procrastinate when I chose to be and that I also have so many creative ideas going at once that my time can get wasted jumping from one direction to another never completing anything.

So I have chosen to narrow the focus so that I can then expand my horizon, yes I know sounds a little backwards. However for my mind I need to focus solely on one creative project at time. I am still working on all of them, just narrowing to focus to daily individual devotion to each project. So I have now I have set up a timetable as to what I will be working on each day and at what time. For creative people this can be a daunting task, taking away the pure spontaneity of creation and deliberating focusing on it can for some seem to stifle the creative flow.  For me it has seen a growth in productivity.

It has also allowed me to clarify the direction of each project. Setting clear goals and deadlines. One of my biggest projects is a book series I am working on, while it has been floundering in the background for some time it is now full speed ahead with November 2014 as the deadline to have it completed, edited and art work done…. I never like to take on small projects.

At a writers workshop I attended a few years ago Lucy Cavendish advised everyone there  that the most important part of writing was to ‘show up’. If you showed up and wrote one full-page a day at the end of the year you would have a book with 365 pages in it. makes perfect sense when you look at it that way. So for the last few weeks I have been committed to showing up and writing a page a day. I call it my conversation hour. I have the conversation with the characters and their journey and you know what we have a great time.

Now I know I am expecting a lot and some may say setting my sights a little too high. Well while I understand that life happens and if need be time frames will shift. However as some who knows how easy it is to procrastinate I believe that some of us… a lot of us choose to let life happen and let it get in the way… after all we all look for a way out of doing things at some stage don’t we. So I have new-found determination to not allow trivial life moments and other people’s drama to hinder the progress.

My conversation hour will go on and on untill the project is finished, after all its only 1 out of the 24 hours I have been given each day to use as effectively I want to.

What will your 24 hours allow you to achieve ???   Life is magic

Change the Scream for Calm

Standard

Screaming and yelling and still no result …. The feeling of talking to a brick wall. That’s what most of my friends have been telling me is going on when they talk to their children these school holidays. scream

Pick up your clothes, don’t hit your sister, pack up this mess, and eat your dinner ….. The list is endless. As parents it can feel that we spend our life or a good majority of it screaming to get things done. And children seem to spend most of their time ignoring this or complaining about it.

So why does it always seem to boil down to a battle of wills. Simple really imagine if your boss screamed at you to get things done how quickly would you tell your boss to take a hike! It would not take long, at the very least you most certainly would be looking for a new job.

So since our children can’t or we hope never tell us to take a hike or look for new parents, perhaps it is in the way we approach the request that needs to change. So here are some simple strategies to try before our children do tell us to take a hike or worst still turn into the screaming teenage/adult from hell!

  1. Set some simple chores that are age appropriate and don’t need to be done every day, responsibility is a good thing but keep it balanced.
  2. If the room is mess does it really matter that much? If your child is tired you are fighting a losing battle that will only see you get a headache, shut the door and tackle it tomorrow when calm.
  3. Stop yelling and screaming, talk to your child the way you want to be spoken to, not only is it more effective you will then raise a child that has respect.
  4. Get down and play with them, encourage creative play, have FUN, build a cubby house, and as you help make the mess you get to help tidy the mess.
  5. Half an hour before bed make it wind down time, grab a book and read to your child or if your child can read then read the book together.
  6. Get outside with your child go for a walk, take them to the park, not only do you get outdoors you get exercise as well.
  7. Count to 10 and step outside if the stress is getting to much, fresh air calms down most and a little bit of space can give you the perspective as an adult to know the right course of action to take.
  8. Encourage them to make the right choices when being asked to do things, this will help them in later life.
  9. Surprise your child with a reward, don’t let them expect it like pocket money, just surprise them with a reward of your choice.

calmOur child are only our children for a short period of time, before long they are young adults trying to be the best they can in the world. They learn how to do this from you, have fun, enjoy them and most of all love and respect them…… the world will thank you for it.
